The 20th of December or "Fèt Kaf" is a public holiday in Reunion Island, commemorating the abolition of slavery on the 20th of December 1848. The festivities on this occasion are multiplying on the island. The people of Reunion mobilise to celebrate freedom and the Reunionese identity with music in the four corners of the island (Saint-Pierre, Saint-Denis, Sainte-Suzanne, Saint-Paul, Saint-Leu, Saint-Joseph, Etang-Salé...).
A rich programme of events is organised by the associations and brings together all generations: street entertainment, colourful float parades, traditional songs and dances, concerts/kabars, moringue demonstrations, conferences and debates, exhibitions, workshops and poetry on the history of slavery and the history of maloya, which has been included in the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO since 2009.
On 20 December 2022, with the aim of introducing the young Tanzanian participants a part of Reunionese culture, our young Reunionese participants went to Grand Bois to take photos and videos of the events that took place there to celebrate the abolition of slavery in Reunion Island .
